Why Write a Letter? All of us can think of moments in our lives that feel like loose ends...moments we didn’t say what was on our mind or in our heart because we weren’t sure if what we had to say would come out right, or if it should come out at all. We have all experienced moments when we were not equipped with the courage to confront someone face to face for so many different reasons. There are people in our past we wonder about, but know that the stars will likely never align for another opportunity to see or speak to them again. In some cases, that’s how we want to keep it. In others, the feeling is bittersweet. All of us have daydreamed about our imagined honesty…that hypothetical commentary spinning through our head. And we all have reasons to keep that silent lump in our throat…but writing a letter via The Unposted Letters Project may make that reason easier to swallow. This book project is an outlet for anyone who needs to let go of these kinds of moments…a quiet way to tie up the silent loose ends dangling from our tongues. For everyone who participates, it is my hope that there is a feeling of relief accompanied by the act of mailing your letter. And for anyone who isn’t sure of letting go, I’ll leave you to ponder this question…what hurts worse, saying something and wishing you hadn’t, or saying nothing and wishing you had? Writing a letter may be the first and easiest step in the right direction. “Unposted Letters” will be a powerful, captivating, and ongoing human interest story. It will be like peeking into someone’s secret drawer and getting a glimpse of the inherent vulnerability we all have in common, but find so hard to share. I invite you to write a letter because it will be fun. It will be hard. It will be an adventure. It might change your life. Write a letter because someone out there is waiting to read it. The rest is up to you… DeMaris Gaunt August 18, 2008 |
